Music Video Review - Muse

This video is in rock/ pop format and was directed by joseph khan.
This Muse video partly uses the nonlinear narrative as aspects of the music’s lyrics are reflected in the video for example the lyrics at 4:05 "you and I must fight to survive" at this point the main character is stranded in the desert, the camera then zooms out from a mid-shot to reveal a skeleton being picked at by a vulture.

This music video follows Pete Frasers point on camera work "close up is prominent because it creates intensity for the viewer" this video achieves this as there are a selection of close ups in the video which change to other close up shots with short strait cuts to create tension and atmosphere.
This video uses one of Steve archers theory's which is Dis-juncture "Radical, used by arty bands, music videos often make no sense" this music video is very fragmented as the story or period is almost non-existent as the video combines a selection of eras mainly focusing on westerns with the modern futuristic twist and the use of various film genres like martial arts and action, this allows the audience to partially make up some of the narrative making the video more interesting.

This music video uses a combination of editing techniques, the main one is the strait cut to create a fast narrative but they also use fade to allow one shot to be playing then playing a secondary shot over the top this allows the narrative to take place in more than one location as the audience get a feel for both locations an example of this is at 1:35 when the main narrative is taking place in the town of crodonia were as the secondary narrative is the band playing he track in a different location.

The video uses slow motion well at 1:45 in the track to emphasise the main characters martial arts skills when defeating several attackers which is helped by the variety of shots used changing from close up to mid shot to show all of the action.

The music video has an essence of comedy as it follows the standard narrative for a western but over exaggerates the main aspects that we associate with westerns. The main points of westerns are good guy meets girl they fall out, then fall in love with each other, then as good guy has been killing the bad guy’s henchmen the bad guy captures good guy’s girl and puts good guy in the desert. After all this just as the bad guy is about to kill the good guys girl the good guy returns from no were after having an epiphany in the desert then all ends with bad guy dying and good guy with girl riding off in to the distance.

This is how this music video plays out just certain aspects have been exaggerated more than in the westerns and changed to create comedy for the audience as everyone knows in westerns are overly dramatic.
